So many service industries won't publish prices. You must 'DM for a quote', fill in a form, wait three days. Like it's a state secret and not a jumping castle. Nothing frustrates me more than that when I'm the one shopping — so I've always been straightforward with mine. Plan with a calculator instead of hope.

THE SHORT ANSWER: a jumping castle starts at R750 (delivery from R370), an entertainer from R1,070, and full packages run R2,690 to R10,090 for 10–40 kids. Most parents hosting 20 children land between R3,500 and R6,500 all-in.

The building blocks

•    Jumping castle: from R750 for a standard 4x4m. Obstacle courses and 3-in-1s around R1,100. Delivery from R370 depending on distance — we run bakkies all over Joburg and Pretoria and petrol is insane, so travel gets charged. And remember it's four trips, not one: out and back to deliver, out and back to collect. So it's the distance from me to you, times four.

•    Entertainer (face painting or balloon sculpting): R1,070 first hour, R570 per hour after. One entertainer gets through about 15 kids an hour.

•    Magic show: R1,900 — 30 minutes of magic plus 30 of balloon sculpting. Forever popular.

•    Animals: bunny petting from R1,070. Pony rides from R2,700. Full farmyard from R3,000. Exotic animal show R2,550 — bearded dragon on the head included.

•    Treat machines: popcorn or candyfloss R800 plus R18 a serving. Slush and ice cream from R900. Operator R700 — optional, but somebody has to spin the candyfloss, and at your own child's party it shouldn't be you. People often get confused about me charging per serving, but remember a machine is like a fridge – you can only take out what you put in. It can’t make ice cream or popcorn out of air – you need to put the ingredients in, that’s why the price differs hugely whether you cater for 15 people or for 500.

•    Electric rides: R750 each, plug-and-play, no operator needed.

•    Decor: kids' tables-and-chairs setups from R900, balloon arches around R1,600, themed party packs about R60 each. Big elaborate décor set ups can become pricey, because they involve lots of labour, planning, printing, setting up and balloons are expensive, so a fancy set up goes from R5,000 and up.

What a whole party costs

Packages bundle it — one delivery, one setup, one invoice:

•    R2,690–R5,990: tables, chairs, themed packs, plates, snacks and a castle. 10 kids from R2,690, 20 kids R3,790. About R269 a child. Less than one school shoe.

•    R5,090–R10,040: all of that plus a treat machine, candy table and electric ride. 20 kids around R6,740.

•    R10,090 and up: stretch tent, slush or ice cream machine, balloon garland with poster — the version where other moms quietly photograph your setup.

Where the money is actually worth it

Here's something I've noticed across 10,000 parties, and the psychologists back it up: kids remember what they DID, never what they looked at. No child in history came home talking about the serviettes.

So: spend on what kids DO. Save on what they look at. A themed poster on the castle does 90% of the visual work of a themed everything.

The hidden costs nobody warns you about

•    Delivery — by distance, from R370. Ask for the total before booking. We will always ask you for your address before sending you a quote.

•    Electricity — castles and machines need a plug and an extension cord that reaches the lawn.

•    Time — entertainers price per hour, so 30 kids wanting face paint is a two-hour booking, not one. Also, remember that when you book the time slot for entertainer take into account the actual time your guests will arrive. We had plenty situations where people are invited for 12 pm and face painter is booked for the same time. Noone is there until 2, and as she’s packing to leave, guests start pouring in. So be realistic about what time your guests actually arrive.

Quick questions parents ask me:

Cheapest decent party? A 4x4m castle from R750 plus your own snacks, 10am to 1pm so nobody expects lunch.

How much per child? Packages land around R190–R270 per child at 20 kids, and it drops as the group grows.

How much does face painting cost for a party? R1,070 for the first hour, R570 per hour after that. One painter gets through about 15 faces an hour, so 30 kids is a two-hour booking.

How much is face painting per child? It's priced per hour, not per child — but at roughly 15 faces an hour, one hour for 15 kids works out around R70 a face.

Do face painters charge extra for costume? R130 if you want them dressed as a clown, princess or superhero. Otherwise they come in colourful party clothes.

Ready to plan? That's the honest kids party cost Johannesburg version — and one WhatsApp gets the whole thing handled: delivered, set up, collected. Message or call Wild Childs on 083 260 9007 with the age, the number of kids and your budget, and I'll tell you exactly what to book. — Oxana
