Type “jumping castle hire Johannesburg” into Google and you will find plenty of colours, sizes and prices.
What you won’t always find is the less exciting information: whether the castle is properly cleaned, whether it will fit through the gate, whether it suits the children’s ages and what happens if the weather changes.
I own more than 30 jumping castles. A large part of the job happens before anyone starts bouncing — measuring gardens, checking access, matching castles to age groups and washing a remarkable amount of vinyl.
These are the seven things I would check before booking one.
THE SHORT ANSWER: Check how the castle is cleaned, measure the lawn and the route into it, choose for the children’s ages, confirm the power requirements, get the complete delivery price, arrange adult supervision and understand the weather policy before paying your deposit.
1. Ask how the castle is cleaned
Children climb, sit and sometimes arrive holding half a cupcake. Cleaning is not a small cosmetic detail.
Ask the company how often its castles are washed and whether the castle will arrive clean and dry. You should get a straightforward answer.
At Wild Childs, our castles are washed after every hire. It is not the most glamorous part of the business, but it matters.
2. Measure the lawn—and the route into it
A castle’s listed size is its footprint, not necessarily the full amount of space needed.
A standard 4×4m castle needs at least 50cm of clearance on every side, so allow approximately 5×5m. More space is better where the garden allows it. You also need room for the blower and inflation tube.
Obstacle courses can be eight, ten or even eleven metres long, so guessing by looking out of the kitchen window is risky. Use a tape measure.
Then measure the access route. The folded castle must still get through the gate, down the side passage and around any tight corners before it reaches the lawn.
If you have a small garden or awkward access, send the measurements and a few photographs before booking. We have compact toddler and 3×3m castles for spaces that cannot take a standard 4×4m one.
3. Match the castle to the ages
The prettiest castle is not always the right one.
For one- and two-year-olds, compact toddler castles, ball ponds and soft play work better than a large open castle.
From about three to five, a standard 4×4m castle is usually a good fit. It gives them enough room to bounce without being overwhelming.
Older children generally want more to do. Obstacle courses and 3-in-1 castles give them something to climb, race through and slide down.
If the party includes toddlers and much older children, they should not all bounce together without some control. Let similarly sized children take turns, or choose a setup with separate areas.
There is some good research behind giving children age-appropriate physical challenges. A systematic review of risky outdoor play found positive effects most consistently around physical activity, with children also learning to test their abilities and limits.
That does not mean removing the rules. It means choosing a challenge that suits the child and supervising it properly.
4. Confirm the electricity arrangements
Most jumping castles stay inflated because a blower runs continuously.
You need a working plug point and an extension cord that safely reaches the setup area.
Check the plug before the party. If the power goes off, get the children off the castle immediately and wait until it is fully inflated again before allowing them back on.
It is a small practical detail, but without the blower there is no castle.
5. Get the complete delivery price

6. Arrange proper supervision
A jumping castle keeps children busy, but it does not supervise them.
A responsible adult should keep an eye on it throughout the party, especially when the group includes children of different ages and sizes.
The important rules are simple:
Shoes and sharp items come off.
Children should not climb or sit on the castle walls.
Do not overcrowd it.
Separate very small children from bigger, more energetic ones.
Do not add water unless the castle is specifically designed to be used wet.
Most problems begin when the children become too rough, the castle becomes overcrowded or nobody notices that the bigger children have taken over.
7. What happens if the weather changes
Johannesburg weather forecasts can be dramatic, while the actual rain lasts for a small part of the afternoon. It very seldom pours for the entire party.
